China Customs Detection of Imported Food

Recently, the General Administration of Customs of China announced a total of 399 batches of imported food that were detected by customs in November 2021 as unqualified and not allowed to enter the country, an increase of 45% over the number of unqualified items in the previous month and an increase of 166% over the same period of last year, reaching a record high. Looking at the eleven months inspection data, the rising trend of unqualified detection by China Customs is significant, which deserves the attention of food trade enterprises.

The reasons for unqualified imported food include the following two categories:
1. Non-compliant documents: unqualified labels, no permit of market access, failure to provide documents as required, or the goods do not match the documents.
2. Unqualified product quality: Expired shelf life, mildewed products, out-of-range or excessive use of food additives or nutritional fortifiers, microbial or heavy metal pollution, excessive pesticide and veterinary drug residues, impurities, or biological toxins, detected animal diseases, detected product ingredients that have not been approved for inspection and quarantine, detection of unlabeled/unapproved/undeclared genetically modified ingredients, illegal use of chemical substances, etc.
All the food that has not been allowed to enter the country has been returned or destroyed, which not only brings economic losses to import and export enterprises, but also damages the goodwill of enterprises.
